VASCULAR ULTRASOUND

Carotid Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a study that uses sound waves to "see" inside your body. A carotid duplex ultrasound is performed to evaluate symptoms including dizziness, loss of memory, stroke, loss of  muscle control and other symptoms that might result from narrowing or blockage of the vessels (carotid arteries) on either side of your neck. A carotid ultrasound can also be used to screen for stroke risk. 

Venous Doppler of Upper Extremities or Lower Extremities

A Venous Doppler test is an ultrasound that uses sound waves to create a picture of your blood flow. The most common use of this test is to evaluate the veins for blood clots. It’s also commonly used for people with varicose veins.

Your doctor may order this test if you have leg pain or swelling, or if you have had a previous history of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Left untreated, these blood clots can break off and pass into your lungs and potentially cause a pulmonary embolism.

Arterial Doppler of Upper or Lower Extremities

An Arterial Doppler ultrasound shows blocked or reduced blood flow through the major arteries of your arms and legs. Your doctor may order this test if you have:

  • Numbness and tingling sensations in your hands, arms, feet and legs

  • A feeling of fatigue and heaviness in your arms and legs

  • Your doctor thinks you may have a condition known as thoracic outlet syndrome
     

The Arterial Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the blood flow from your heart to the upper extremities (arms) and lower extremities (legs), which can be seen on a computer screen.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening

An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is when the wall of the aorta weakens and bulges out. Abdominal Aortic Ultrasound is a highly accurate way to measure the size of the aorta and an aortic aneurysm. Treatment of the aneurysm will depend on the size of the aneurysm. A special technique called Doppler ultrasound can be used to examine blood flow through the aorta.
